Why Is Your Mouth So Dry?
Do you suffer from a dry mouth? This can be a discomforting condition that may also cause bad breath. Let’s find out some of the causes of dry mouth.
The actual dental term for dry mouth is “Xerostomia” and it means dryness of the mouth because the glands that produce saliva are not working as well as they should. If you feel that you have a dry mouth all the time there are several possible reasons for this.
You may have a systemic disease that is causing the problem. Causes of dry mouth may be because of a rheumatoid condition, a dysfunctional immune system, a hormonal disorder or a neurological problem.
If your salivary glands have been removed you may suffer from a dry mouth. Sometimes decreased chewing ability will result in dry mouth. Radiation therapy can also be a cause of dry mouth problems.
There are over 400 drugs that cause dry mouth as a side effect. Some of the most common drugs include; decongestants, diuretics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, and antihistamines.
When you experience dry mouth there are several common symptoms. You may have a burning sensation on your tongue, experience difficulty eating, have a problem with your speech, are often thirsty, have trouble wearing your dentures, have impaired taste, or have dry, cracked lips.
There are things you can do to help combat dry mouth. Always have water available and drink often taking sips. Chew sugarless gum and avoid tobacco, alcohol and foods high in sugar. You can purchase a saliva substitute that sometimes helps and you should always use fluoride.
When you know the causes of dry mouth, you can take measures to improve the problem.
