Diabetes and Gum Disease

Gum disease happens more often when a person has diabetes.  Diabetes and gum disease tend to go together because when you have poor blood sugar control it will often lead to gum disease.

Diabetes and gum disease are not such a problem when the person who has diabetes has it under control.  This is good news; when you keep diabetes in control you need not suffer from gum disease more than anyone else.

If diabetes is poorly controlled the blood vessels thicken which causes the flow of nutrients to the mouth to slow down.  When this happens the removal of harmful wastes slow down too and this increases the risk of gum disease.

Another problem when diabetes is not controlled can lead to high glucose levels in the mouth which allow germs to grow and once again this can lead you wide open to gum disease.

When you visit your dentist you should always tell her about any current symptoms and how often you experience low blood sugar.  Your dentist also needs to know the medications you are using, the dosage and frequency.

Other areas of interest for your dentist will be the last meal you consumed before your appointment and the carbohydrate that meal contained.  You should tell her how often you test your glucose level and what the latest levels are.  These things will help your dentist to give you the safest treatment.

When you have diabetes most of your dental work can be done in your dentist’s office. It may take you longer to heal from dental procedures.

The best thing you can do to avoid gum disease is to control the diabetes.
