Why Is Your Mouth So Dry?

The actual dental term for dry mouth is “Xerostomia” and it means dryness of the mouth because the glands that produce saliva are not working as well as they should.  If you feel that you have a dry mouth all the time there are several possible reasons for this.

You may have a systemic disease that is causing the problem.  Causes of dry mouth may be because of a rheumatoid condition, a dysfunctional immune system, a hormonal disorder or a neurological problem. 

If your salivary glands have been removed you may suffer from a dry mouth.  Sometimes decreased chewing ability will result in dry mouth. Radiation therapy can also be a cause of dry mouth problems.

There are over 400 drugs that cause dry mouth as a side effect.  Some of the most common drugs include; decongestants, diuretics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, and antihistamines.

When you experience dry mouth there are several common symptoms.  You may have a burning sensation on your tongue, experience difficulty eating, have a problem with your speech, are often thirsty, have trouble wearing your dentures, have impaired taste, or have dry, cracked lips.

There are things you can do to help combat dry mouth.  Always have water available and drink often taking sips.  Chew sugarless gum and avoid tobacco, alcohol and foods high in sugar.  You can purchase a saliva substitute that sometimes helps and you should always use fluoride.

When you know the causes of dry mouth, you can take measures to improve the problem.

Bad breath out of your nose is caused by sinus problems, allergies, the common cold and other kinds of congestion.  Many medications you use for these problems may cause your mouth to be dry which only adds to the bad breath situation.

Another great way to rid yourself of that nasty bad breath out of your nose is to make a vaporizer treatment.  Just heat a pot of water with enough vinegar so you can smell it.  Turn off the heat when the water boils and lean over the pot so you can inhale the steam.

If your child has a problem with bad breath there are many things you can do to help.  Children and bad breath does not need to become a source of embarrassment for your family.

First of all find out what the source of the problem is.  Sometimes bad breath can be because of certain foods the child is eating.  Cheese, onions, and garlic often cause bad breath.  Drinking pop can also be an offender.

If you want to keep bad breath in children to a minimum, be sure they brush and floss regularly each day.  It may be a bit of a struggle to get these tasks accomplished but it will be worth it.  Try a shopping trip to pick out a favorite toothbrush and toothpaste.  Make brushing fun and something to look forward to.  Brush with your child and enjoy the time together.

When a child has dry mouth or post nasal drip from a cold or allergies, they can experience bad breath.  If your child snores or breathes through his mouth, dry mouth can occur.  This sometimes leads to bad breath.

Regular check-ups at the dentist will help with bad breath problems.  When your child has clean teeth and dental problems taken care of on a regular basis, bad breath may not be so much of an issue.
