Tooth and gum disease, or periodontal disease as those in the business refer to it as, is one of the most frequently diagnosed dental diseases. But, it doesn’t have to be. Reducing the risk of developing tooth and gum disease can be achieved through making healthier lifestyle choices that not only improve oral hygiene, but overall health.

Tooth and gum disease is caused by bacteria being trapped on the teeth by a build-up of plaque. This bacterium produces a toxic acid that attacks the teeth and gums, causing swollen and bleeding gums, the degradation of bone density in the jaw, and eventually the loss of teeth. Left untreated, tooth and gum disease can lead to heart attack, stroke, diabetes and respiratory diseases.

There are several lifestyles changes that can be made to prevent or reduce the onset of this all-to-common dental disease. One way is to put an end to all forms of tobacco use. A recent study concluded that cigarette, cigar and pipe smokers, both current and former, have higher incidents of tooth and gum disease than those who have never smoked. Smokeless tobacco, or chewing tobacco, is equally as damaging if not more, as it is placed directly on the gums.
Another way to help prevent tooth and gum disease is to change eating habits. Foods and drinks that are high in sugar actually cause the bacteria trapped in plaque to produce more of the damaging acids then do non-sweet foods. Although it’s difficult to eliminate these foods from one’s diet, a commitment to not eating them between meals will greatly reduce daily intake and the risk of tooth and gum disease.

Oral Health is basically the overall health of your mouth. How your gums, teeth and breath are. If you do not perform correct and appropriate dental hygiene, you may end up developing an oral mouth disease. Some cases are severe, while others have ointments that can easily treat the more mild cases. The condition that you keep your mouth in will determine what your Oral Health is like, and what it will be like for future reference.

In order to keep a good dental hygiene you must follow all of the basic steps that are recommended by probably every single dentist that you have come across. Every time you set up an appointment, you always hear them ask you how many times you brush your teeth a day.

If your reply is once, you can expect them to raise an eyebrow at you and tell you to bump it up to three times a day. If you do not brush your teeth very often you are possibly at risk of developing serious oral diseases.

There is a possibility that you can develop Halitosis, Gingivitis, Gum Disease, Tartar, Plaque and other diseases that may even be more severe such as rotting teeth (you would really have to be against brushing your teeth for that one) if you do not brush your teeth. Also use other hygienic methods such as flossing and using mouthwash, anything you can do to help your mouth will just take you one step further away from having to worry about any sort of risky Oral Health.

There are several things that can result from not flossing your teeth, and they aren’t good either. The build up of plaque can lead to gingivitis, and the left over particles of food in your mouth can create Halitosis. There are many more things such as gum disease and cavities. The importance of flossing impacts a lot more of your dental hygiene than you probably give it credit for.

I cannot stress enough that the importance of flossing can prevent many oral symptoms and diseases. Also make sure that you are brushing your teeth 3 times a day or more. It might be wise to get the toothbrushes with the floss bristles to help get those hard to reach places where plaque can build up. Please do not exclude regular flossing though, the importance of flossing can’t just be plainly provided by the floss bristles on a toothbrush.

Regular flossing after you eat meals, when you wake up in the mornings and before you go to bed will help remove unwanted plaque, which will save your mouth from several symptoms. The importance of flossing is also equally as important as using mouthwash as well. Mouthwash will kill the bacteria in your mouth and the liquid can move more easily between your teeth than just floss alone. The best advice possible is that you just use all recommended dental hygiene by your dentist. Remember the 3 key things to a healthy mouth… brush, floss and rinse (mouthwash).

Believe it or not, Dry Mouth occurs in women more than men, and is also referred to as Xerostomia. Statistics say that 1 out of 5 adults suffer from this disease. Sometimes there can be several complications with the disease, but mainly caused by the meditations that you can take for them. Normal everyday functions such as taste, speech, swallowing, smell, sight and mastication can be greatly affected by this disease.

The symptoms for this disease contain a decrease in saliva, dry/cracked lips, burning tongue, dry cheeks, dry throat, dryness in the nose, dry or burning eyes, dry skin or the development of a butterfly rash, pain and swelling of joints, problems and difficulties with eating dry food and tasting difficulties. The general symptoms are reported to be weakness, fatigue, aching, depression and weight loss.

As you can see this is a very serious disease, and if you notice any of the symptoms consult a doctor as soon as you can.

Believe it or not, I know a lot of people that do not seem to be aware of the importance of Dental Hygiene. It is not just to make your teeth look white or to have that perfect smile… but to also ensure that your teeth will simple not fall out of your head! Even by following less than basic oral health is a better start than forming no habit of it what so ever.

Dental Hygiene is used with different methods, whether it is whitening creams to a simple toothbrush. If you care for your mouth you can consider yourself to have a healthy mouth. Some people are just too lazy, either that or they claim to not have any time to brush or floss. Unfortunately this can lead to oral diseases such as Halitosis, Gingivitis, Gum Disease, Tartar, Plaque and so much more.

If you want a clean, healthy and white smile then you must be willing to perform the correct oral hygiene. If you do not brush your teeth, if you even start brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day, you will find the pleasure of whitened teeth. If you are always on the go, then even carrying around mouthwash can make a big difference by killing all of the plaque, gingivitis and bacteria that is found in your mouth.

By following these simple steps, your Dental Hygiene will rocket sky high, and your teeth will be in a lot better shape and less likely to be prone to damage or infection.

The Right Dental Care Products

The brand of Dental Care Products that you use can play a large role in your oral hygiene. If you get an extremely cheap brand, then you know that you are most likely not going to get very good results. My favorite toothpaste is called “Colgate 2 in 1 mouthwash toothpaste,” this brand is a little more expensive than others, but it is definitely worth the extra bit. It really does keep my teeth clean and white, even if I only brush them twice a day, because it works better than any other brand that I have ever used.

There are some other great toothpaste brands out there. When it comes to picking the right brand of toothpaste, make sure that you follow a trusted brand name that you always hear about, that is really important, especially for dental products. Other Dental Care Products that you need to use are floss and mouthwash. I know a lot of people that do not floss, and with the modern toothbrushes that they are creating with floss bristles, you do not really have to be too concerned about actual floss.

You should definitely make it worth your time to purchase Dental Care Products such as mouthwash, though. Not only does mouthwash leave your mouth feel mint fresh, but it literally works wonders for your dental hygiene. It kills plaque, tartar, bacteria and gingivitis. It pretty much lessens your chances greatly of getting an oral disease or infection.
