Gum disease is caused by the excessive build up of plaque and tartar on the teeth over time. It is very important to keep up a consistent oral care routine to prevent gum disease and other ailments of the mouth. Add to your daily routine an anti-plaque mouth wash, and gum disease is further avoided.

There is no evidence that mouth wash effects the build up of subgingival plaque (plaque below the gum line); however, the use of an anti-plaque mouth wash decreases the amount of plaque-forming bacteria in the mouth. Gum disease may be common, but it can be prevented with persistence.

Four parts of a healthy oral care routine are: brushing twice daily, flossing, and using an oral rinse once, daily. Visiting a dentist for a routine cleaning every six months is the only way to remove tartar (hardened deposits of plaque) from the teeth. Think of mouth wash as a a preventative supplement to your efforts to fight the build up of plaque, and tartar.

If you have been diagnosed with a gum disease, a doctor may prescribe Chlorhexidine. This anti-microbial rinse kills bacteria in the mouth.

When you are out shopping for a quality oral rinse, look for an antiseptic mouth wash that is approved by the American Dental Association, and endorsed by the FDA ( U.S. Food and Drug Administration ). This will ensure that the product you purchase has been thoroughly tested, and approved for preventing harmful bacteria in the mouth.

The Modern Day History of Using Mouthwash

In the modern day, the history of mouthwash that you are using is important. Do you have a history of mouthwash? Or do you even know what the stuff is? Mouthwash kills most of the germs and bacteria in your mouth, which is extremely important for fresh, clean smelling breath, as well as the prevention of any oral disease. Mouthwash also whitens your teeth immensely, believe it or not. It only costs a few dollars and does a better job at whitening your teeth than the expensive at-home whitening kits. There are what seem to be about a million benefits from using mouthwash. They even have little portable mouth wash tubes that you can carry around in a pocket or purse, or wherever.

Your history of mouthwash and how often you use it will definitely play a role on how white your teeth are, how fresh your breath smells, and the bacteria and germs that are killed in your mouth while using it. If you haven’t tried using mouthwash that much, you may want to try to update your oral hygiene, because using mouthwash is definitely worth that extra 30 seconds of gurgling. They are inventing flavors that make it a fun experience as well, such as orange or vanilla, so don’t skip out on this step of oral hygiene!

What Makes A Mouthwash Good?

Contrary to popular belief there are different kinds of mouthwash, they are not all the same and do not accomplish the same things. So, what makes the best mouthwash?

If you are looking for the best mouthwash you need to know a few things first:

If you find all the different kinds of mouthwash confusing the first thing to know is that they come in three main types. They will prevent tooth decay, help treat gum disease or help with a bad breath problem.

The last two kinds are not your best choices unless a dentist would recommend them.

The best mouthwash to buy is one that helps prevent tooth decay. When you go out to buy mouthwash make sure it contains fluoride and has a low concentration of alcohol. It is even better if the mouthwash contains no alcohol at all.

This information should be listed somewhere on the bottle of mouthwash. It is good to have fluoride in your mouthwash because it protects your teeth against tooth decay and makes your teeth stronger if you continue to use it on a regular basis. Alcohol tends to make your mouth dry and can actually cause bad breath over a period of a few hours.

When you use mouthwash a good time to rinse is in the evening before you go to bed. It is important to brush your teeth and floss before you use the mouthwash. You should keep the mouthwash in your mouth for at least one minute. After you spit out the mouthwash it is better if you do not use water to rinse because that can affect the benefits of the mouthwash.

Remember the tips in this article and you will be able to find the best mouthwash for you!
