Like many common household items, we give little thought to their origins, and the toothbrush is no exception. But for those with a desire to know where things come from, who invented the toothbrush is a burning question waiting to be answered. As it happens, there isn’t one person that can be singled out as being the one who invented the toothbrush. Instead, the toothbrush, as we know it today, evolved over time and out of necessity.

The origins of the toothbrush can be found as early a 3000 BC. These ancient peoples used what’s known as a chew stick, a small twig of bamboo or other wood with a frayed end that was chewed and rubbed against the teeth. The modern toothbrush began to take shape in China in the late 15th century. Bristles made from the coarse hair of a hog’s neck were attached to a bamboo or bone handle, and were used in the same fashion as today.

If there were one name that could be thrown out as the person who invented the toothbrush, it would be William Addis, an Englishman who mass-produced an early version of the modern toothbrush in the early 1800′s. Running a close second would be H.N. Wadsworth, the first American to hold a patent on the toothbrush, which led to mass production around 1885.

While bone and bamboo handles were replaced by wood in the early part of the 20th century, boar and other natural bristles continued to be used. However, in 1938 Dupont, then known as Dupont de Nemours, introduced the first nylon bristles. Despite this, regularly brushing one’s teeth was not a part of American life until after the second world war, when the good hygiene habits of the returning soldiers took hold.

The use of stainless steel accessories in the bathroom has become quite popular. The typical stainless steel toothbrush holder is composed of clean and simple lines in the utilitarian style, but can also be found in more elaborate forms and designs. Combine a stainless steel toothbrush holder with a matching soap dish, towel bar, paper holder, tumbler, waste basket, tissue box, or shower curtain rod to fully accessories a bathroom.

The two most common styles are the cup holder model, and the wall-mounted model. The cup holder usually holds four toothbrushes. When choosing a model like this, look for one that separates into two pieces for easy draining and cleaning. The wall-mounted model usually holds four toothbrushes, and attaches to your wall, using either screws, or suction cups.

The use of stainless steel accessories has several advantages. On an aesthetic level, steel has a clean, fresh look. When compared to plastic, stainless steel is also easier to sterilize, as it’s surface is less porous. Stainless steel is a also more durable than plastic. It is rather versatile, as tends to blend well with pre-existing bathroom decor.

When shopping for a stainless steel toothbrush holder, and other matching accessories, look for a sturdy models that are composed of medium-weight non-corrosive stainless steel.

Stainless steel toothbrush holders are found in several different finishes. A brushed steel finish has a textured, matte look. At the opposite end of the spectrum, you have the bright chrome finish, which is rather shiny, and reflective. Other finishes that lie somewhere between these two extremes are also available, and you may even find combinations of the two.

Philips Medical Systems offers several Sonicare price toothbrushes, with various features. Sonicare toothbrushes utilize the vibrating power of sonic technology that oral care professionals have been using in their offices for years. This technology is now available for in-home use with Sonicare.

Even if you know you want a Sonicare, price and toothbrush effectiveness are concerns for those making the switch from using manual toothbrushes, to the use of electric models. $60.00 is about what you will spend for the most basic model from Sonicare. Price and toothbrush effectiveness both increase as you approach the newest Sonicare Model; the IntelliClean 8800, which is priced at about $145.00.

Here are details on the Sonicare models:

The Sonicare Advance toothbrushes are available in the 4100 series, 4300 series, and the 4700 series. These are Sonicare’s most affordable models. They lack all the frills, but produce powerful plaque-fighting results. These models have a 2 minute timer. The 4300 comes with a carry case, and the 4700 comes with an extra brush head.

The Sonicare Elite models are the 7300 and the 7500. Both models feature brush heads with long, thin, angled necks, and small heads that reach far inside the mouth for maximum cleaning. Both have a a 2 minute timer, and a 30-second-interval timer, and a carry case. The 7500 includes dual speed control, and a gauge that indicates the charge level of the battery.

Sonicare’s IntelliClean System incorporates a special Crest toothpaste cartridge into the brush. The toothpaste moves up through the brush, and through a special brush head that is specifically designed to dispense the Crest toothpaste.

The Rotodent toothbrush is recommended for use by dentists and other oral care professionals. It is clinically proven to reduce the build-up of plaque on the teeth, which prevents gum disease. The Rotodent toothbrush requires less pressure to clean teeth than other electric toothbrush models. It cleans the teeth gently, and thoroughly.

The Rotodent toothbrush is battery-powered. It rests upright on a charging base which holds 3 extra toothbrush heads. It comes with several different brush head designs. The toothbrush closely resembles the professional handpieces that you find dentists using in their offices. The handle is large for comfortable gripping, and the neck of the brush is set at an angle that works best to clean the teeth and the gum line.

Standard Rotodent toothbrush heads are small and the bristles are set in a circular formation. This size works best to reach all areas of the mouth, and works to provide access to those hard-to-reach places. The brush heads are also suitable for use with various orthodontics, dental appliances, and restorations. The microfilament brush bristles are designed to reach underneath the gum line and in between the teeth, where bacteria form harmful plaque and tartar deposits.

This toothbrush is at the expensive end of the electric toothbrush models, and it’s benefits make it worth the price. It provides superior at-home cleaning, and dental care.

This type of toothbrush is only available for order from a dentist. Speak with an oral care professional to obtain product brochures and other information about Rotodent.

You wouldn’t think that there would be anything interesting about the history of the toothbrush, but you actually might find this article quite entertaining. These are some random yet fun facts to know about the history of the toothbrush. No one really knows exactly or for sure where the toothbrush was actually derived from or used. There are rumors saying that the toothbrush was invented in China at around the 11th century. Other people like to believe that the toothbrush was invented by the Romans near the time of Caesar, which basically tells us that it is quite unclear when the toothbrush was made.

Everyone was aware that their teeth needed to be cleaned because there were several toothaches, etc. to provide that their teeth needed to simply be cleaned. The thought of the toothbrush was probably invented in the 13th century. Instead of a toothbrush in the 13th century, they hadn’t quite come up with that sort of technology yet so they decided to use sharp objects instead. It was very common and usual for toothpicks to be made of silver and bronze!

The Africans used to brush their teeth by means of using a flat stick to scrape off all of the left over debris on their teeth. In the 16th or 17th century China had finally invented the modern tooth brush. This is where the history of the toothbrush became bumped up a notch. Luckily now we are provided with plastic bristles for our toothbrush, back then they used animal hair until 1938!

Which Electric Toothbrush is Best For You?

There are so many electric toothbrushes on the market, how do you choose the one that is best for you? Is there really any difference between electric toothbrushes?

Let’s compare electric toothbrushes and see if there is any difference between all those models. When you compare electric toothbrushes you will be able to choose the one that is right for you.

You should not buy the first electric toothbrush you see nor should you purchase the one that costs the least money. When you compare electric toothbrushes be sure to do your research first.

Do you want an electric toothbrush that has a timer, spins in circles or moves up and down? How much are you willing to spend? Is the toothbrush just for you, a partner or your whole family? These are some questions to ask when you are comparing electric toothbrushes.

Sonicare is one of the most popular electric toothbrushes at this time and it is also one of the most expensive. The features vary depending on the model you purchase but things to look for include timers, ergonomic handles to make gripping easy, a battery power indicator and eight rows of bristles.

The Braun Oral B is another popular brand and is very reputable. Braun models have many levels of toothbrushes and you just need to decide which one satisfies your needs. The Braun electric toothbrushes may not quite measure up to Sonicare is some ways but they are also less expensive.

You may want to look at the Airsonic and Interplak electric toothbrushes. They are quite basic and do not offer all the extras that Sonicare and Braun do.

Take your time when you are comparing electric toothbrushes and choose the one that is right for you.
