Tooth Whitening For Sensitive Teeth

by admin on May 26, 2010

Pain and discomfort are big concerns for people with sensitive teeth who want a whiter, brighter smile, but are hesitant to subject their teeth and gums to uncomfortable and cumbersome bleaching procedures. It used to be that professional tooth whitening involved the use of caustic solutions, and exposure to intense heat. Today’s new gel whiteners make sensitive tooth whitening possible.

Gel whiteners lighten the tooth enamel and dentin through the use of hydrogen peroxide, or carbamide peroxide. Carbamide peroxide is a thicker form of hydrogen peroxide. This makes it easier to use, and more effective. If you have sensitive teeth, a gel whitener containing carbamide peroxide may work for you, as it is a gentle substance.

The most popular gel treatments for sensitive tooth whitening include a combination of dentist supervised care, and at-home administration. There are several gel whiteners available over the counter, but they are generally weak in their potency, and whitening ability. They may also include sports mouth guard type trays that are uncomfortable and messy.

A dentist makes a mold of a patient’s teeth. This mold is then used to create a positive plaster mold. The plaster mold is used to create a custom whitening tray, which the patient fills with whitening gel.

Custom-made whitening trays are rather comfortable, and are worn for a few hours during the day, or over night. The whitening process happens gradually, over the course of a week to two weeks. Generally, the more expensive a gel whitening system is, the faster the results are noticed. Some dentist-supervised at-home whitening kits show results after the first or second use.
